It's very difficult to do a proper form, as you've found out.  You can
restrict the number of characters which can be entered into a field
(such as allowing only 2 characters for a state abbreviation), and that
will sometimes be all that you need to control the size of your edit
field.  However, when such a restriction by the number of characters
isn't possible (and it usually is not), then the most used technique is
to create a table that's just the size that the form edit field should
occupy on the page (because you can exactly specify the size of a
table), and then place your field code inside the table (which is
usually just one cell).
