If you have a fast connection, JAWS and Citrix can be a fantastic combination.
I use the combination almost daily.
There are, however, a couple of querks.
First, even though JAWS is running on your computer, the client, you may have
to start JAWS manually on the remote computer, the server, too. It is awkward,
but not a big deal. When you are comnected to the server, you will hear the
familiar Windows start-up tune. Then, press either the Windows key or, on a
laptop, control plus escape to activate the "start menu."
Then, press the letter "r" to activate the "run" dialog box. Finally, type,
for example, "JAWS62" for JAWS 6.2, to fire up JAWS remotely.
After doing that, JAWS will be running.
The second querkk relates to JAWS highlight recognition. JAWS probably won't
recognize the item that is highlighted on the screen, even though the same
application, when run locally, works fine. The fix is simple. Just get your
JAWS cursor on highlighted text (verify it using JAWS key plus 5 to read the
color of the text as contrasted to surrounding text). Then, press JAWS key
plus F-2. Arrow to "Custom Highlight Assign," press ENTER, and follow the
prompts from there. You will need to repeat this for each application you run
remotely. Once you've done the above, runningJAWS and Citrix is pretty much a
breeze.
Actually, there is a third thing that might be considered a querk. If you are
used to highlighting text and pressing shift plus F-3 to change the case of the
text (in Microsoft Word), don't! Shift plus F-3 will screw-up your remote
session.
The above is not readily apparent from the JAWS documentation, which is
uncharacteristically poor when it comes to use of Citrix.
Happy computing remotely.
