I can't answer your question about file type. Here's what I did and 
there are probably quicker ways.

I found the original alert in Lavasoft. I ran "media" in the run 
dialogue. I copied jungle expand to my briefcase, then renamed it 
"alert". I pasted that file into the Lavasoft location, was asked if I 
wanted to replace the original. Yes.

Could it be that you had no spy ware to invoke the alert?

I don't understand why this alert sound is a .wav file. I think other
windows sounds such as download complete, are from windows directly. But 
I
could be wrong. I made the wav file play and don't mind the sound but it
doesn't play when ad-aware is finished. Is something turned off?
