Re: CMOS Should be BIOS

BIOS - Basic Input Output System.
In other words, the really basic operating system which begins the boot process, makes sure that all hardware devices listed as connected are in fact connected. Plus the date and time and all sortza groovy stuff that can really screw up the system if you try hard.
DOS only so you need an external synth plus a config.sys and autoexec.bat file.
Oh Joy.

I should have been more careful in my terminology. I actually meant to say
"BIOS" , which are the settings that are written to CMOS chips and backed up
by your computer lithium battery, and are used in the very first part of the
boot process. The BIOS setup screen is available by pressing F2 on some
computers in the first few seconds after power-on or restart, and long
before any speech is loaded -- therefore we have no speech and need someone
else's eyes to make changes.

I'm sorry for being obtuse using "CMOS" when I meant "BIOS".

Here's a quote from Wikipedia:

In IBM PC Compatible computers, the Basic Input/Output System (BIOS)
also known as the System BIOS, is a de facto standard defining a firmware
interface.

The BIOS is boot firmware, designed to be the first code run by a
PC when powered on. The initial function of the BIOS is to identify, test,
and initialize system devices such as the video display card,
hard disk , and floppy disk
and other hardware. This is to prepare the machine into a known state, so
that
software stored on compatible media can be loaded, executed, and given
control of the PC.
This process is known as booting, or booting up, which is short for
bootstrapping.

BIOS programs are stored on a chip and are built to work with various
devices that make up the complementary chipset of the system. They provide a
small
library of basic input/output functions that can be called to operate and
control the peripherals such as the keyboard, text display functions and so
forth.
In the IBM PC and AT, certain peripheral cards such as hard-drive
controllers and video display adapters carried their own BIOS extension
ROM , which provided additional functionality.
Operating systems
and executive software, designed to supersede this basic firmware
functionality, will provide replacement software interfaces to applications.

Hi All,

For those of you having Jaws focus issues. Are any of you running a program
named Autosizer? If you are, Autosizer has been known to cause focus issues
from time to time. If you are running Autosizer, try uninstalling &
reinstalling the program. If the problem is Autosizer this is the only way
to correct / diagnose the issue if using Autosizer. Also, what does CMOS
stand for? Thanks much, take care.
