Let's hope they're wrong about the tablets, which have yet to become the next big thing, despite many predictions over the last decade or more. Hurray for touch typing. Subject: Re: Buying a new system Hai there, I have just been listening to the Which consumer report for august, I get my copy on tape still, being old fashioned, they run lab tests on items, They say samson had good ratings for netbooks and mention a model n220 as being good. However they say try them in the store, I knownothing about Netbooks I have a toshiba laptop for around the house it is a bit heavy for travelling, however and I hope they all use Jaws they said"wwe think sales of netbooks will drop in 20011, in favour of tablets, I imagine a tablet is like a netbook but more modern, they test battery life and screens and numberpads for ease of use, since they think tablets are the future I expect you are all clued up about them, They also had an item on mobile phones with speech but it all sounds very complicated. Coping with my old xp laptop and dell windows 7 64 bit is more than enough. re heat from laptops I have a cousin sighted who always uses a laptop at home he says he puts 4 stainless steel egg cups under the laptop to let the heat disperse ,I told him I would be bound to knock the lot over if I did that but do you have good ideas for cooling laptops at all dorothy ----- Original Message ----- From: Yadiel <mailto:yadosotomayor@xxxxxxxxxxx> To: jfw@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Sent: Tuesday, August 10, 2010 6:19 PM Subject: Re: Buying a new system I suggest the more RAM the better. Also, a 64 bit OS. It processes the information a lot faster. Also, a good hardrive. 250 or higher. I don't know what to suggest. I'm primarily looking at laptops, though if there's a better option in desktops, I wouldn't rule that out either. I'm a student with low vision, and tend to use JFW and Zoomtext in tandem, often with Kurzweil 1000 running as well. I'm starting my Master's degree this fall, and need a system that can run the adaptive software simultaneously, as well as a few open browser windows and probably 2 or more open pdf files as well (my work is very research-intensive). In the past I've had problems that seemed to indicate that my computer had issues with all the various open windows that were running, and so I'm looking for any advice on hardware to avoid, minimum specs or suggested hardware configurations that could handle the kind of work I'll be doing.
