I really didn't like that fact that when I used to work we had a Samantech package and when I tried to install System access the virus program kept it from installing it. 

    Lets just say samantech products are a pain in the but.

Well, It's been 5 years since I un installed Symantec antivirus and I'm still finding bits of in the registry. For the record, the original anti virus program created by Peter Norton was very good. Symantec added the bloat.

That's certainly a valid support of your position.
One note for the future: If you do ever decide to surgically excise Norton 
from your system (and I do mean surgically) you'll find that it is so
intertwined in all your system and executable files that it will not
uninstall gracefully and leave annoying pieces of itself scattered all over 
the place like free radicals floating around in our bloodstream.

There is a "Norton Removal Tool", from Symantec that is required to do a
thorough job before considering yourself free from Norton-itis. It's
interesting (and Leo LaPorte on the radio has said this) that Symantec
created such a pervasive product that they needed to create a special
program to get rid of it. I for one am glad it's gone.

So in fact, I've given you even more reason to not mess with it, I guess.

Thanks for the advice.. As one gets a bit older, homeostasis tends to sit 
in and I sometimes just plain get to lazy to take care of such nuisances.

You are sure putting up with a lot of hassle, in my opinion. Why put up
with
all that, and just remove Norton and replace with AVG or MS-Essentials?
Both
are free.
I switched over when my Norton annual update notification came through -- 
I
decided, enough. And it was definitely a resource hog.

I have used Norton anti-virus for years and don't change just because I am 
used to it.  It does not work well with JAWS, but I pretty much get by
with
it with just a bit of rare sighted help (especially for installation). On 
my XP system, it also routinely conflicts with JAWS automatic startup
causing a system crash so I do not auto start JAWS, but use a shortcut key 
once the sysstem is up.  Not quite as convenient, but I get by.
If I was not used to Norton and had not used it for years, I probably
would
look for something a lot more JAWS friendly!
