Sometimes, alphanumeric characters make up the code for speech engines
to do certain things. Unless I change my JAWS dictionary, (my Apollo 2
synthesiser doesn't like the @ [at] sign before or after certain letters
in an email address.) these might be accented characters not commonly
used in English. the Viavoice speech engine has a few such no-no's when
used with Kurzweil 1000. If you'd been on the main JFW list when the
'aesthetic' crash was doing the rounds, you'd have come a cropper when
using Eloquence.

Well, I just tried it several times and it didn't crash. And I can
honestly say
that in my 6 years of using different computers and the various versions
of
Jaws. I've never seen Jaws crash because of the spelling of a word.
This is
all news to me. I just don't see how it's possible. Combinations of
letters
are nothing but sounds, and jaws just pronounces, or tries to pronounce
what it
sees. Now, why a curtain group of letters and sounds could cause Jaws
to crash
just doesn't make sense. I'm not saying that it can't happen, but the
likelihood of it happening is nearly impossible.

hi. I think the bug exists when eloquence runs across the word. Typing
it
isn't enough, it has to actually try to speak the word to crash.
I was told that it is the word" seasure, with the letters, a and e
reversed.
so in other words, if eloquence runs across the word seasure, with the
letters, a and e reversed in it, i'm not going to type the word just in
case, then it's bye bye jaws.
and this *has* happened before. an earlier version of JAWS and eloquence
had the exact same problem with the word "aesthetic".
