Boot up problem

Yesterday while reading my e-mail I suddenly lost all sound. I tried to
bring jaws back up by using the shortcut key but without success so I
rebooted the computer and it took over two hours. since then, when I boot up
or reboot the computer it takes over two hours but after the computer is
booted up everything seems to work fine. I feel that when I lost sound and
tried to bring jaws back up I somehow checked or unchecked somethingthat I
shouldn't have. I will appreciate any suggestions on this as I have not
been able to find the problem myself.
