Awesome! Everything you've described so far sounds like exactly what I
need! I'll definitely be taking a serious look at this. Who the heck needs
Norton Ghost if Casper does all the things that are described in that
description you provided?

Casper does its back up with Windows running using its own software. I
have never had a problem running the back up and it does make a Bootable
copy of your hard drive including the OS.

Ah, I think I understand now. Thanks for the clarification. The one
thing I still don't get though is how you're able to make a bootable copy
of the OS while Windows is still running. I thought it wasn't possible
to copy system files that are running and thus the requirement by some
backup applications to boot into DOS before copying the OS.

I don't have any trouble making the Casper Bootable back up, no sight
help is needed, I can do it using JAWS, the OS is there too, that is why
it is called a Bootable back up. I might need a sighted person to but
the Casper back up on the new hard drive, the Casper software takes you
through loading the back up on your new hard drive, that is why I have
the manual and Casper program on a CD.
Casper makes a bootable back up of everything including the OS. You can
open the external drive and read the program files and all files on the
external drive using Windows Explorer.
When you plug in your new external hard drive Windows XP is going to see
it as just another drive and assigned it a drive letter, mine is drive
G.
So if I took the external hard drive to another computer that computer
would too see it as just another drive and let you copy, cut and paste
the date into the new computers hard drive.
I use Windows Explorer and move or copy files back and forth between the
computers internal hard drive to the external hard drive.
I also use a Iriver H-10C MP3 player and the computer sees it just as
another drive labeled Iriver.
So what I am saying is any drive plugged into a USB port will be seen as
another drive, the Thumb drives very popular today are just the same.
No program is needed just to transfer files from one drive to another
Windows Explorer does this, a software program is only needed to do a
back up of the hard drive, that is what Casper and Ghost do!

I had no idea that Windows XP would not let you boot off an external
hard drive. That is certainly good information to know. I guess it
makes sense now that I think about it since none of the USB ports would
be active until Windows had booted up. So with the Casper software,
you were able to create an image of your hard drive, including the
operating system without much trouble? From what I gathered of your
message, I'm assuming you still needed to get sighted assistance to
create the backup of the operating system right? It's good to know
that at least making backups of regular data using Casper was Jaws
friendly. I have Norton System Works which I believe includes Norton
Ghost, but I haven't installed that particular application yet. Once I
get the new hard drive, I'll go ahead and install Ghost. It sounds to
me though, like I'm going to have to purchase both an internal and an
external hard drive. I still want the external so that I can keep
everything in a separate, and safe place. It'd also make moving files
to other computers much easier as well. One other question, when
you're using your backup software and external drive, do you find
the process of backing up files from multiple computers to be a simple
task? I've noticed that some of these external hard drives have these
"one-touch" backup features, and I'm wondering if the software is able
to tell that the drive is being attached to different computers before
going ahead and making the backup. Thanks for the info and help.

I use a external hard drive for data back up it works fine, it looks
just like another drive and is JFW Friendly because you are using
Windows XP(Explorer).
As I said I use a external hard drive with Windows XP home. I use
Casper the Bootable back up program, it is pretty much 100% JFW
Friendly.
That is the good part. The problem comes with the fact that Windows
XP will not boot up to a external hard drive so it is better to use a
internal hard drive for a program such as Ghost by Norton or Casper by
Future Systems. Using a internal hard drive allows you to boot up to
the second internal hard drive and then you can replace the bad drive
or copy the second one over to the first and you are in business.
Nothing that is available except Narrator the Windows speaking program
will work for the Blind when booting up. So if you had a hard drive
failure you would not be able to tell what the computer is doing, this
might require a sighted helper, but all of this does allow you to get
back into operation in a minimal amount of Time!
I plan to reboot to the Windows XP CD and then move the bootable
Casper copy to another new hard drive, I have a copy of Casper and the
user manual burnt to a CD so if I need sighted help the manual and
information on how to set up a new hard drive are there for them to
follow.

I'm looking at buying an external hard drive for making backups of all
my important files. After some looking around, I've found that most
of these external hard drives include backup image software. There
was a recent discussion on the list about this type of software and it
was determined that Jaws will not work with any image software because
of the fact that you're required to boot your computer into DOS in
order to run the application. So, with this being the case, the only
alternative is to get sighted assistance to help you get through the
process of running the software and making the backup. My question
is, I'd like to get a backup image utility that is fairly intuitive
and easy to use, so that I can guide someone who is not so computer
saavy through the process. Has anyone had any good experiences using
this type of software? Any recommendations? Thanks.
