Application Mode?

I started IE8 with JAWS10 and was immediately confounded by something called 
Application Mode. I have never encountered this before and I don't know if it 
is JAWS or IE8 related. I do know that I could not use the web page after JAWS 
said Application Mode. Any thoughts about what this is and why its appeared on 
my computer all of a sudden?
