Hi Katherine,

Well, you do *NOT* have to have OpenBook to be able to read printed
materials.

Omni Book Pro or Abby Fine Reader will do a very competent job and create a
Microsoft Word document which Window-Eyes, JAWS or Hal will read.

In fact, Abby Fine Reader is the engine (one of them) which OpenBook uses.

You are just paying a blamed high premium for some conveniences which
(supposedly) OpenBook provides.

If you can not afford JAWS, Window-Eyes Hal or one of the high priced screen
readers there is System Access (used to be called Freedom Book or something
like that) can be rented by the month and it really will do a fairly
competent job for you.

There are also some open source screen readers which are up and coming and,
while not without fault, they are also without cost.

HTH,

Cy, The Anasazi.

Oh, thank you. I just priced Open Book and there is no way that I can
afford such a thing. I wish they would not charge so much for important
things like this, it makes some of us have to do without being able to read
important documents. I think it's sad, to say the least. This is a health
matter and is vital information.

Kathy, it sounds to me like what you've got there is a .PDF that's really a
scanned image of a document. This will require you to run OCR on it. IF
you can't do this yourself because you don't have an OCR program on your
machine, send it to me and I'll try to decode it for you.

Sincerely,

Hello,

I received a PDF document from my doctor's office and when I opened it,
was told it was an empty document and Jaws could not read it.

I remember we had a discussion about this at one point but cannot recall
what was said. Can someone tell me how I can read this document using Jaws?

I am using XP Home and Jaws 9.

Katherine
