I got the same strange message about the age of my files, but the scan turned
up 43 new critical objects, so I guess it worked.

Mine says "Your definitions are 730485 days old." I won't do the math.

However in the Lavisoft Ad-Aware SE folder there is a file that says
defs.ref.old besides one that says defs.ref. I don't think I'm wrong to infer
the old designation means that I did put in a newer ffile.

  Hi Matthew,

I've downloaded and installed those updated definitions in what I believe to
be the right folder, but when I launchAdAware, it tells me my definitions
are hundreds of days out of date or something, and asks me if I want to
check for updates. As if it isn't aware that updates have been installed.

Just trying to humor it, I allowed it to go online and look. It said no
  updates available, of course.

Now, the message below says to check the Initialization item in the
interface to see whether o not the defs have been updated. But even with the
good old scripts, tabbing around, I don't come upon any initialization tab
or button, as I never did before, either.

So what might I be doing wrong, or missing?

  Thanks.

  Hello Matthew,

Please accept our sincere apologies for delays on developing our new product
so that it is compatible with your needs. As you know, we are addressing the
  issue this year.

In the meantime, you are welcome to continue to use Ad-Aware SE Personal for
as long as we are able to provide updates to Ad-Aware SE's threat database.
Lavasoft plans to continue to provide updates to the Ad-Aware SE threat
  database well into this year.

In order to continue to keep Ad-Aware SE Personal updated, you will need to
perform manual updates when new Definitions Files are released. Here are the
instructions for performing a manual update for Ad-Aware SE:

  - Close Ad-Aware SE.
  - Download the latest Definitions File in ZIP format here
http://download.lavasoft.com/public/defs.zip and save the file to a
  temporary location.
  - Unzip the contents of the file either with a ZIP utility or with the
built-in support in Windows to the Ad-Aware SE installation directory, which
  usually is "C:\Program Files\Lavasoft\Ad-Aware SE\".
  - Open Ad-Aware SE.
  - Confirm that the latest Definitions File is installed by checking the
"Initialization Status" in the main program window.

  Best regards,

  Erin Earley
