Here are some instructions from Erin Edgar that I saved. If the manual update
doesn't work with your version, you might try the Ad Aware link on the programs
page at www.jfwlite.com. That is probably where I got mine. Message follows.

Hi,
I received these steps for manually updating AdAware 6 via another e-mail list
and have used them with good results.

Steps for manually updating Add Aware.

1 Paste this link into your web browser.

"http://download.lavasoft.com/public/defs.zip";

2 When the download dialog box comes up just tab over to open and hit enter.

3 There should be only 1 file in this zip folder. Highlight it with the arrow
key and push control c to copy it to the clipboard. By the way the name of

the file you are looking for is called "defs.ref".

4 Now hit the Windows key and the m key to go to the desktop.

5 Hit the m key until you find my computer. Hit the enter key now and arrow
down to your C drive and hit enter again.

6 Hit the p key until you hear program files. Then hit enter here.

7 Now hit the l key until you hear Lavasoft. Now you can hit enter to go in to
this folder.

8 Now hit the arrow key you should hear some thing like Ad-Aware SE Personal,
go ahead and hit enter here.

9 Last but not least go ahead and paste the file that you have in the clipboard
with a control v key.

10 You can close all of the Windows you currently have open, and run Add aware
to make sure the updated file was installed correctly.

Erin

  Hello Dave,
Well, I might be wrong about Norton then, I have not used it since I guess
the end of 2005, when I got P Off with the higher cost of the annual
subscription fee, I think it went up to $29!!.

It is Alice that said AVG keeps running all the time, I do not have 8.5
installed yet, but surely receive the notice that I must by April 12!

O K then, if Norton is a bummer, Any other reputable antivirus program you
can think of that might be JAWS friendly, or at least somewhat accessible?

Oh, gosh, no! Don't fall into the Norton trap. It is not even liked by
sighted computer experts due to how it pervades so much of your operating
system and overloads the CPU processing.

I tossed Norton over 4 years ago and have never regretted it. It (version
2005) was very inaccessible to JAWS so I could not set it up for my needs and
could only helplessly have it run in default.

I'm using AVG Free version 8 and have had no notifications at all.

You report that it is constantly scanning. I only scan when I request, so
that's something you can change in the settings.

      Hello Friends,
Well, for a few weeks now, every day when I first turn my computer on, I
receive a message from AVG stating that I must switch to version 8.5 by April
12, as my current version will no longer receive the latest definitions by that
date.

I am not sure what to do.
It does not mention any charge!

If I have to pay $35, I might as well add 14 and make it $49 and go with
off the shelf Norton.

I used it for 10 years with JAWS, granted I had to route JAWS to PC to
read most of the dialog boxes, but that was so rare, Norton took care of
itself, and my computer also, it caught a few viruses, and in 10 years, I never
had an issue with infections or such.

I think I did have some one help me with the original Install, but after
that, renewing the annual charge for renewal of the definitions downloads was
not a problem with JAWS.

      With Best Regards,
      Alan

        Hello Alice,

Where did you get 8.5 free? When I clicked on the update it said you
had to pay $35.

Has anyone downloaded the new AVG free 8.5?
I did, and now, it seems that AVG is running scans for hours
every day. I guess this should make me feel all safe and protected from viruses
and other goodies, but while this is going on, JAWS stutters and hitches up and
locks up, and it's really hard to get anything done.
Anyone else noticing this? Are there any settings I can change to
encourage JAWS to keep performing even when these scans are running in the
background?
          Thanks,
          Alice
