also if it is only a folder or file you would like to scan, you can focus that 
folder and then hit the application key. there is a menu point for avast which 
lets you scan this folder/file.

  You can start Avast from either the system tray or programs menu. In the 
former, type S, wait for the memory scan to run its course, tab to the area 
where you can hit the space bar to check areas to scan such as C, tab to start 
scan and hit that button.
