Hello listers, A couple of weeks ago, I posted a question to the JFW users list, asking if there was a JFW-friendly (and preferably free) program available which could convert braille files into text files. A list member suggested nfbtrans, which I found at nfb.org. I just wanted to let everybody know that the nfbtrans program is indeed a very JFW-friendly program. It is a DOS program, but is menu-driven, and extremely easy to use. The menu gives you the choices of printing a .brf file to a braille embosser, converting a text file to a braille file, or converting a braille file into a text file. I understand that a Windows program called wintrans is available that can work with nfbtrans, but the DOS program is so easy to use as-is, that I don't see a need for it. In fact, if you follow the readme file's instructions for setting up a file association for .brf files in Windows, all it takes to convert a .brf file into a text file is to click the .brf file, and nfbtrans automatically creates the text file for you. If you are not a strong braille reader (80% of blind people can't read braille) then the nfbtrans program is a useful JFW-friendly tool. Now that the National Library Service offers downloadable web braille books, this conversion program gives us a convenient alternative to books on cassette.
