[jawsscripts] Can't get arrays to work

I've tried using arrays in my scripts with JAWS 11 and am having no luck. I
have followed the directions in the scripting manual
to a t but I cannot even get past the defining of an array variable. I get
an error "the word var must be followed by a variable definition". It
doesn't seem to perform as outlined in the manual.
Is anyone else having this problem??
The example variable definition section of code is shown below:

StringArray strings
let strings = new StringArray[50]
