Kevin,
Usually if you go to "Tools -> Account Settings -> Account Name ->
Server Settings" and check the box that says "Check for new messages at
startup" Thunderbird
will start in the Inbox folder.
Also go to tools, options, general and uncheck the first item about
showing the start page in the message area. This Tools, options area is
very similar to Outlook.
When I launch Thunderbird, I tab twice and it lands on your Inbox folder.
