In the case of graphical images of written text, if we have OCR software
we can often run the file through that. Both K1000 and Open Book, as
well as ScanSoft and Abbyy FineReader (later versions), have .pdf
conversion facilities. With K1000, one opens the program, or one
chooses to print the PDF using the K1000 Virtual Printer (or the Freedom
Import Printer in the case of opening or using Open Book). (These are
'virtual printers' that run as if recognising the file on paper.
Results thus obtained may not be letter-perfect, but will be better than
nothing at all.

Hi Colin,

Acrobat reader is a product of the same company as the writer as you
probably know so it will just decode the PDF code into straight text.

I should add that this process is not always perfect. Additionally, it
is
possible for creators of PDF documents to produce totally graphical
pages of
written information. In these cases we are absolutely scuppered.

Another problem is that, occasionally, PDF creators use password
protection
which can inhibit our ability to save the content as text.

Having said all this, Acrobat reader makes it much easier to read PDF
documents without having to revert to plain text.

Remember that you will often see an additional dialogue before you get
to
the document and will have to click the start button in this dialogue
for
the document to be prepared for accessible browsing.

HTH,

Phil Medway.

Thanks Phil. I'll look into this. I thought I had Acrobat 7 but upon
investigation I find that my PC still claims that it's 5.0. I don't
know
how Acrobat works. Does it in effect do an OCR job? If V7 doesn't sort
out
the formatting problems, I'm wondering if Kurzweil would be worth
looking
at.

Cheers

Colin

Hi Colin,

If you are using the latest version of Acrobat reader which is version
7,
you have the option of checking for updates on the internet.

I happened to do this a few minutes ago and was presented with a number
of
updates including one for multi-lingual support. I didn't install this
update but it might be worth your while trying that before going any
further.

Note. If you don't have version 7 yet, you aught to acquire that first
and
ensure that you get the full version rather than the basic one.

HTH,

Phil Medway.

Hi all,
When I read Francis' message, I was on the point of making a similar but
rather more taxing enquiry. I have just received an electronic copy of
an
Italian language textbook from the American publishers. Instead of
supplying it in Word, .RTF or .TXT format as requested, they sent the
thing
as a series of .PDF files plus a few other things that my PC doesn't
even
recognise. When I try to read the .PDF files, Jaws only manages to read
a
small percentage of the content of each page. I assume that this is
because
the page is formatted in loads of boxes, columns and fancy tables so
that
Jaws doesn't know whether to read across the page or down it. In the
past,
I've tried to convert similar documents into .TXT in the recommended way
and
fount that everything is legible, but that a large part of the text is
jumbled. Does anyone have any idea how best to cope with this problem?
Do
I aim to find a way of reading the .PDF file or take the problem to the
University's Computer Centre?

Colin
