you can buy JAWS, but you have to buy the latest version.

You don't get all the features though so earlier versions of JAWS for old
unsupported operating systems should be cheaper or arguably even free. HJ
as it was then did this with JAWS for Dos after all.

Cheers

What an interesting thread this is, as only today I tried to install JAWS 8
on my old laptop running Windows ME, it has JAWS 7 on it O K but version
8 -
forget it!!!

Does anyone think we should be allowed to use the latest accessible
software
on older machines? Or do we have to keep dipping in to our pockets to keep
up with some "WIZ KID" at Freedom Scientific who thinks it's a good idea to
grab us by the parts that hurt the most!

Best wishes,

Michael.

"What is the situation where someone wants to buy Jaws for
Win98 where, I believe, the most recent version is Jaws 7.0?"

In general there is no problem if your Jaws license exceeds the operating
system that you are running on or the Windows you have. However in the
latter case you will need to make sure you only install the Jaws that is
suitable for your Windows. In the case of Windows 98 that is going to be
Jaws 7.0 and no higher. As regards the earlier point what I mean by that
is
that if you have a JAWS professional license, say from your work then there
is no problem with installing that on Windows XP Home or Windows 98 which
normally be covered under Jaws standard. The only thing to bear in mind is
the cuttof in support for Windows 98.

Scenario 1:
You are a new user who has never brought Jaws. In this case you would be
buying Jaws 8.0 standard which you are obviously entitled to use but if
Windows 98/ME is your O/S what you will need to do is download Jaws 7.0 and
install that first. You will then be able to use your authorisation CD
from
your version 8.0 pack and activate just the same as with Jaws 8.0. When
you
system finally gives up you get a new one with either Windows XP Home or
VISTA Home Premium on it you will probably want to take advantage of Jaws
8.0 and activate that on your new machine.

Scenario 2:
Jaws user 7.0 below on Windows 98/ME. The situation here I would say is
less clear and depends what features you are after and how desperate you
are
to get at them. Personally my view would be that if you have a Jaws on a
Windows 98 I would say there is less immediate benefit to upgrade until you
went to Windows XP or VISTA on a new machine. The latter would be a
mandatory upgrade whilst I think for XP it would still be a good idea to
update. Assumig you decided to upgrade be aware of course that you would
only be able to use Jaws 7.0 even though you may have paid for an upgrade
to
version 8.0 so I think the decision such as it would be should be based on
the basis of the acquisition of a new machine/operating system in the near
future with either XP Home or VISTA Home Premium.

Taking the problem the other way around users should realise that whilst
release as early as 4.02 and 4.5 may technically work on Windows XP because
they originally supported it, this may not necessarily mean that that Jaws
will go on some of the newer machines with current video adaptors. In very
general terms Jaws 5.0 and beyond gives us some more wiggle room with
allowing us to substitute video intercepts of later versions of Jaws which
may work with a video card. However in very general terms software and
your
PC should be roughly contemporanious with eachother.

If you are using Windows 98 with Jaws and are thinking of upgrading for
some
reason do some research or ask on the list or directly with support, don't
just go ahead and upgrade one something like the O/S assuming that
everything is going to be OK.

Sorry for the length of post, it has turned from kill two birds with one
stone to something of a mass turkey cull.

Regards.
