The solution could involve a little expenditure! Get a newer CD player.
First check in the shop if it will play all types of audio CD's -
CD-RW's as well as CD-R's. (My hi-fi purchased last summer has one
such.) Now, when you put a data CD into such a CD player, the player
will try to play it and you will hear a constant noise that is quite
unmistakable. No damage is done to the date or the CD!
