Hi Jamie,

We are probably both right in some respects. I guess
Francis must have one of the devices referred to in the
fourth paragraph, so will have to fork out the extra.

George,

I'm afraid that I have to contradict you here George - or at
least the way you phrase your message leads me to believe
that I need to contradict you.

To my knowledge, not withstanding a range of capacities,
different manufacturers and the difference between CDR and
CDRW disks, there are fundamentally 2 types of blank disk
that you can buy.

You can buy blank music CDs and blank data CDs. The blank
music CDs, when recorded, should be able to be played in all
music players (assuming that they are designed for normal
music format). Blank music CDs tend to be more expensive.
Blank data disks can be used for multiple purposes including
being formatted as music CDs. However, some CD players will
not accept the data CDs which have been formatted as music
CDs.

I believe that Francis is wanting to know how to identify
blank music CDs from blank data CDs. I'm not sure what the
best way to do this is but I am led to believe that those
that are specifically blank music CDs have some kind of logo
on them that denotes their intended use. This is obviously
not much good for a blind person. I also believe that
programmes like EasyCD Creator will not let you create a
data CD from a blank music CD but will allow you to choose
what type of CD you want to creat with a blank data CD.
This might be a second best way of finding out what kind of
CD you have.

I suspect that someone out there will know a much more
precise way of achieving the task you want, Francis.
Cheers,

Jamie

Hi Francis,

CDs from the shop should all be the same.

However, it is a well known fact that some manufacturers CDs
do not work on some equipment.

Unfortunately, there is no way to tell, short of bitter
experience and trial and error.

My best advice would be that if you find a particular make
that works on your systems, then always buy that make.

George.
