Ron,

I had a similar problem on both my work and home laptops in the last year.
In both cases I was inches away from being advised that the only thing that
I could do was to reconfigure the laptop back to its original state using
the original disks or re-install Windows. The problem with the first option
was that it would mean losing all files that hadn't been backed up and the
second problem was that the version of Windows that I had was buried in the
master disks from Toshiba - again the only way to run it was likely to
involve loss of data. If you can borrow a Windows disk you can probably get
round this problem.

In the end, I did find a way round the problem on both counts but it
required the help of a person with sight.

If you want, I'd be happy to talk you through what I had to do in order to
get it working properly again, but it involved getting to a command prompt
and running the check disk command to repair the damaged file on the hard
disk. Feel free to give me a call any evening from Tuesday evening onwards
at home on 0141 570 1814. The ins and outs are a bit messy to try to write
down in an email.

Cheers,

Jamie

Subject: [jaws-uk] help

My computer has locked up with no speech and a message as follows.

"Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt.
System 32 drivers ntfs.sys. You can attempt to repair this file by
starting windows setup using the original setup cd ROM. select R in the
first screen to start repair".

Now the problem is this. I bought the computer second hand and don't have
the CD at least I don't think I have. In any case as there is no sound the
CD would not play audio unless the info is in text format. There is no
cursor on the screen which is a new flat screen monitor. Would installing
this have caused the problem? Any help would be appreciated.

Using JFW 4.51 and Windows X P home.

Cheers

Ron
