yes I've seen plenty of the kind of messages you are thinking of I think 
where you just get a load of random bits of text all jumbled together on a 
page.  I understand that these are just sent to find out which accounts are 
active and which bounce back as undeliverable, but when you clicked on this 
link it should have opened up your page in the web browser.
