At least I did not dream I heard the dog bark then? I was starting to wonder if I was losing my marbles I did not let it stop me getting in update on Desktop but understood it had noted an intruder and I could either note or ignore I did not put in the 20 digit number either. However the laptop is a different kettle of fish it seems not to be able to contact FS at all and asks if my settings have altered, I could not even if asked remember that 20 digit number which is on the packet of Jaws 7, I will wait a while it maybe some small alteration in the settings is the cause, in any case I will not shut down the firewall or avg because it would b risky
DorothyPs I did not have any real problems last update other than to be startled at hearing a Woof! and later an error messagee

Well, if you get a dog, you've got to expect it to bark when a possible intruder tries to get in... So, if you want the eextra security, you have to put up with the inconvenience." This is a very aposite comment, never a truer word said. It is exactly the terms in which I would put the case. There is always a trade off between security and convenience, the anti-virus is very convenient but because it only deals with the problem once it has been created by someone and then installed onto your machine it will sometimes fail. I use WinPatrol as a preventative measure and it does just what I want which is alert me to what is going on in the background and allow me to make some decisions about what gets installed at startup. The decision process is similar to that which you make for a firewall. Similarly I use NoScript (a Firefox add-on to disable scripting on unknown websites) which also has a ceertain level of inconvenience attached when visiting new sites, but again it helps me to make an informed decision as to whether I allow someone's site to run code on my machine or not which may be completely innocuous or possibly harmful. Such things as those mentioned are not for the passive recipient of care and protection through their software. These items may not be a panacea and there are individuals for whom it may not be an appropriate measure. Regards. But if it's like the previous update, a lot of people had to do a Jaws repair before they could get that. As for yur Winpatrol... Well, if you get a dog, you've got to expect it to bark when a possible intruder tries to get in, and the dumb beast doesn't know that in this case you want to let the thing in. So, if you want the eextra security, you have to put up with the inconvenience. -----Original Message----- From: jaws-uk-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:jaws-uk-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Dorothy Ingram-Gorban Sent: 31 March 2009 10:32 To: jaws-uk@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [jaws-uk] Update and laptop and settings Dear List I sent the others Posts last night and have tried this morning to get in update on laptop No luck, it says Please wait then it has a problem contacting FS, it did not ask for my 20 digit number, I had thought of removing the AVG or weakening the Firewall but heard on the radio this morning a warning about a worm maybe I should have mentioned this on its own, it sounds rather evil kind of worm so I shall just be satisfied I got it on Ok on Desktop, it cannot be Winpatrol as Jaws overcame that on Desktop after the initial bark and asking for permission to let it in.
