Two things come to mind, Jane, and neither of them are pleasant.  I would be 
thinking that you either have a faulty hard drive or a nasty virus.  Still, 
what do I know?  I'm by no means an expert.

Have tried many things to no avail but I have found a possibility of maybe
getting back some of the files there is a file called tilde which maybe a
possible route back to the lost files, many
