Good afternoon Phil, I appreciate what you have said. I guess we are all looking for our PCs to boot up speedily, so I'll take a very careful look at programs that start-up. Thank you again. With best wishes, Keith -----Original Message----- From: jaws-uk-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:jaws-uk-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Phil Medway Sent: 05 September 2008 13:08 To: jaws-uk@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [jaws-uk] Re: Speeding boot-up time Another thing you might wish to look at in order to speed up boot time is the startup sub-menu in programs from the start menu. Startup contains shortcuts to applications which are loaded at boot time in order to make them readily available when they are required. The trade off for this, of course, is that the time for them to load is added to the boot up time rather than when the application is actually called. This is fine if you need to use something like MSWord regularly and need quick access to it but far too many applications, in my opinion, place shortcuts in startup and loading all of them just to make them quicker to access helps to fill up your memory. Additionally, if the memory fills up, virtual memory has to be used which is just an overflow technique used in the background by the system involving writing parts of the content in memory to the hard drive and reading it back again when required. This procedure is much slower than using actual memory. There may well be things in the startup which are necessary to keep there but applications such as Adobe's Acrobat reader and Microsoft Word are not, in my humble opinion, essential at boot time. If you do decide to investigate the startup contents, be careful not to remove anything which you are not certain of but remember that the startup items are only shortcuts and not actual applications so removing them will not uninstall an application. You can find the startup sub-menu at: start menu / programs and pressing the letter s until you hear the word start up sub-menu. Cursor right once to open the sub-menu then navigate the list of shortcuts. Selecting one then pressing the applications key or right clicking will give you a menu from which you can choose to delete the item. Finally, remember the warnings in this mail. If your PC is taking a few minutes to boot the problem may be connected with something more serious. If the PC is only taking a minute or so to boot then my advice would just be leave well alone as the difference is unlikely to be that noticeable. If time to boot up is really crytical you could try putting the PC into hybernation rather than doing a standard shut down. The PC will boot quickly but this can sometimes have a negative affect on screenreaders such as JAWS. On some machines problems happen after standby or hybernate Modes where items in lists and other things are not quite read properly. You would just need to try it and see.
