Also if you choose one of the Realspeak solo direct voices in JAWS 10 it
is then possible to alter its volume from within the profile dialogue.
Unfortunately Eloquence does not support this.

you need to have a 2nd soundcard for this or  a hardware speech 
syntehsizer. The easiest would probably be  a chepie usb external
soundcard.

The latest build of jaws 10 lets you select the sound device to use 
quite easily. In older versions of jaws you need to manually edit the 
jfw.ini file to specify the sound device to be used. this only works 
for eloquence, though, not other software synths unless you set up 
sapi 5 to use the other non-default sound device on your system.
