The query it forms appears valid. For example:
http://en.wikipedia.org/w/api.php?action=opensearch&search=chicken&format=xml&limit=1
This returns valid data, so what's happening after that is anyone's guess.
I have to admit that ResearchIT has always defeated me. It's like a
team sat down and said "how can we take a simple idea, and make it
almost impossibly complicated, tricky to debug and poorly documented?"
and then vomited up the result and ensured that any questions to FS
about it would go totally unanswered.

All I can tell you is that the debugger (which works differently from
the documentation - thanks, FS) is of no help either - it just spews
out error code 4 which has no reference.
