yes you are right, indipendent from the motherboard is always a good thing. basically, it has its own memory so it doesn't muck up with ram, this is always a good thing.
how ever, it is also fair to say that most modern systems have at least 512 Mb of ram, but still ideally what i mentione is a good thing.
oh yeah, apps is a short-hand form for applications. if you have your cursor reading options in tthe configuration manager to read cursor shapes, when you load an application it will say app start. so i have odobpted this termonology and used this form of short-hand.

HI , I wonder if I may ask a question please? I do not know much about
technical things, but a lot about technical problems! Can you explain what
you mean when you say the new card should not be on the Board? Do you mean
that a Video card such as I bought some years ago and had fitted and is
independent of the motherboard, with its own memory? This used to be  good
advice but now I am told is the cause of problems with Drivers, my laptop
which  only has what Toshiba gave it has no problem, but my Desktop with
independent Video or Graphics gives problems getting the right Drivers.. as 
for DCM something to do with Chaining Management, it  is very hard to get
ones head around, but I assume it enables one bit of Software to speak or
hear another? sorry  if I have totally misunderstood what you are

the creative cards are certainly what a lot of blind people go for.
the SoundBlaster and audigy or them two   combined witch makes the SB
audigy.
remember, your videocard should not be on the board as this can just screw 
up ram and obviously your comp will slow down and this means less apps as
well to load.


 also, there have been some issues with the A T I A video cards; i'm not a
videiocard expert but you could ask some other person on the list.
