Barbara,
I know you have been given the answer to this question but I feel it
worthwhile mentioning that you can also go into the application properties,
the Shortcut page, and you will find an item in there called "Run" where you
can select "Maximise". If you Ok on this the application will be maximised
automatically.
You can get to the application properties by going to the item or program
and press Alt Enter before opening it.
