Subject: [jaws-uk] Master your Jaws.

Hello everyone. I hope you all are keeping really well. Since its inception
in 2008, I was quite fascinated with the idea and the concept of J-Tools.
J-Tools is a quite compact set of scripts which is designed to facilitate
your experience with Jaws. It uses the concept of keystroke based
utilization to make your use of Jaws more easier. With J-Tools, you will
inshallah be competent to carry out the subsequent tasks.
Please note that the following segment is taken directly from the Astec
website with respect to minor editings made by me. This is what J-Tools
does.
1: .Easily select (or highlight) text within our supported computing
applications without the need to continually hold down a number of Keys on
the Keyboard including the Shift Key. 2: .Reproduce regularly used words and
phrases with the minimum of effort and Key presses. 3: .Locate specific
folders, web pages and documents with incredible speed. 4: .Send an e-mail
message to a previously stored Contact from within any application. 5:
.Benefit from a range of tools which cause JAWS to speak or move to
pertinent information as and when you need it.
6: .Keep up-to-date with your friends, family and co-workers using Twitter.
7: .Have sounds play to substitute speech prompts within the product. 8: .
Take a backup copy of your JAWS settings and other configuration files in
the event that they need to be restored at a later date or transferred to
another computer.
9: .Gain access to a list of Keystrokes for all J-Tools functions
conveniently grouped together according to task.

In addition, if Dragon NaturallySpeaking Premium or Professional is
installed onto the computer hosting J-Tools technology, you are able to
compose text quickly and easily by dictating it rather than typing. You will
find writing documents and email messages far easier if you speak to the
computer and will save you time each day. We refer to this functionality as
J-Tools Dictate. The role of the J-Tools Dictate component of this product
is to assist you in the creation of text only. Controlling the computer by
voice is not supported.

However, you do not need to use Dragon NaturallySpeaking with the J-Tools
Dictate functionality in order to benefit from J-Tools. Dictating is just
one option of which you can take advantage if you wish. J-Tools consists
predominantly of a number of fantastic utilities which can be operated using
the keyboard.

Please note that this product is being made freely available by Astec,
principally to demonstrate our expertise in the area of JAWS script writing.
Should you wish to commission Astec to write JAWS scripts to support an
application or computing environment, please contact us for details.

While we will attempt (when possible) to fix any bugs which may exist within
J-Tools, no further development will take place to include new features.

Getting started.

We strongly recommend that you download the J-Tools documentation and
carefully read the installation and setup notes contained within it.

In addition, you may care to listen to Episode 6 of Astechnology, which
again contains useful advice on installation and walks you through a number
of the key features of J-Tools.

Computer specifications.

If you do not plan to use J-Tools Dictate functionality, the computer onto
which J-Tools should be installed should conform to the following minimum
specifications:

list of 3 items
. 1 GHZ processor;
. 512 MB RAM;
. JAWS for Windows compatible sound and video card.
list end

If you do plan to use J-Tools Dictate, it is imperative that your computer
conforms to the following minimum specifications:

list of 4 items
. Pentium 4 or Core 2 Duo Processor (or laptop computer equivalent); . 3GB
of RAM; . JAWS for Windows compatible video card; . Full duplex
multi-channel soundcard.
list end

If you do plan to use J-Tools Dictate, it is imperative that your computer
conforms to the following minimum specifications:

list of 8 items
. Microsoft Windows XP (all releases);
. Microsoft Windows Vista (all releases); . Microsoft Windows 7 (all
releases); . Microsoft Windows8 (unless you are using Dragon
NaturallySpeaking); . Microsoft Word from Microsoft Office 2003, 2007, 2010
and 2013; . Microsoft Outlook from Microsoft Office 2003, 2007, 2010 and
2013; . Microsoft Internet Explorer Version 6 through to 10; . Mozilla
Firefox web browser version 3 onwards.
list end

You will also need JAWS for Windows version 14.0. This can be downloaded
from the Freedom Scientific website:

You can also subscribe to the J-Tools mailing list for discussion of the
product and its use. To do so, send an email message to:
j-tools-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx, putting the word subscribe in the subject
line.

You can obtain the latest build of Jaws 14 by following this link.

Now, here is the link to directly obtain J-Tools.

The J-Tools documentation is installed by default and it can easily be
located in the program group in the all programs sub menu.

Someone may ask; Why am I sharing this?

Well, it all started out with me desiring to use J-Tools whilst upgrading to
one of these latest Jaws builds. Well I am afraid, but I have to stick to
Jaws 14 if I wanted to keep J-Tools. So last Monday morning, I was sitting
down thinking about finding a solution to this problem. I have Jaws 15 but,
I still can't use it in conjunction with J-Tools. So I thought about this
for awhile and then I said to myself: Hmm, this is a good idea. I can try
this. I decided that I want to try transfering J-Tools with its entirety
from Jaws 14 to 15. Is that even possible? Well, to answer this question
properly, I had to give that a try. I will inshallah share with you the
consecutive procedure which I carried on to successfully transfer J-Tools to
the Jaws version of my interest. Please note, if you are interested to
follow this guideline, I assume you would already have J-Tools installed and
it successfully works in conjunction with Jaws 14.

Well, if it's the case, please pay attention and follow with critical
arrangement the steps below.

1;.Go to your C drive and within there, find a folder called ASTEC.

2; .In the folder named Astec, you will find the following items. JAWSFiles,
JToolsSettings, SpeechFiles, Text, and Twitter.
Each one of these is a sub folder and it contains multiple files.

Well, you ought to go to each folder and copy all what it contains to the
following location.

Start menu, all programs sub menu, going to Jaws program group, of course,
you have to specify the Jaws version you want to use for this, Explore Jaws,
explore my settings and paste these files therein.

It's quite a scrupulous process but it's truly worthwhile bearing.

I have couple of major notes to finish this.

As you are performing this copying operation, I conform again, it's assumed
that you have Jaws 14 installed and it successfully operates in conjunction
with J-Tools version 6.

It's also advised that you have a prior version loaded during this copying
operation.

So for instance, if you are copying your files from Jaws 14 to a higher
version, it's recommended to have Jaws 14 loaded during this.

Furthermore, as you are copying this, when you paste your files into the
specified location, you will be prompted with multiple options to choose
from. Please choose, (Copy and replace.)

It's a long process but I personally think it's worth doing.

It needs patience and attentiveness.

Now, you are finished.

If you launch Jaws 16 for instance, and you have been copying these files to
its sub folder which is named explore Jaws, you should hear the following
prompt spoken at its startup.

J-Tools 6.0 build 4 is active. JAWS for Windows is ready.

If you heard this, congratulations! You have successfully transferred
J-Tools to fully function with your specified higher version of Jaws.

It's thought-provoking and it is neatly beneficial.

It's a painstaking process but it's worthy of cerebrating.

I hope that was useful to everyone.

I apologize for cross listing or sending out unsolicited posts. I just meant
to share this for the mass benefit of all Jaws users around the world.

If you encounter any difficulty while trying to follow this, please get back
to me, so we may inshallah work this out.

I apologize again for any unintended inconvenience.

Thank you for your time and courtesy.

Peace be with you.

Mostafa Almahdy, your friend from Cairo Egypt.

It's always hope that gives meaning to life.
