I think the answer will depend upon what you use your Jaws for and what
plans you have in the future for your computer.

The large part of the thrust of Jaws upgrades since 4.5 is to make the web
more accesible with more tools to help you deal with websites. Throughout
the 5 and now 6 cycles we have more ability to customise the performance of
Jaws on websites as a whole or by page/domain. For those that you come to
often you can use features to create labels for edit fields and graphical
links you find on pages that don't speak well. This may be useful on
websites that you return to often but are not optimal in speech.

If you are hungry for more information generally then the speech and sounds
manager allows you to use on the pre-set schemes or roll your own to gather
more information about the text you are reading such as format, colour and
attibure information. This works better than it would have done under 4.5
and below and is far more flexible if you want to invest some time with it.

If you plan on buying a new PC this year then you should very definitely
consider Jaws 6.0 a worthwhile purchse on 3 grounds at least:
1 Most new PCs will have more modern and faster graphic cards, Jaws 6.0
has made significant progress in being comptaible with a wider range of
these devices.
2 A new PC today will not have a floppy drive, even if it does you cannot
always guaruntee that the chipset will work with your authorisation disk
now. Jaws 6.0 no longer uses the floppy authorisation therefore PC chipset,
or absence of floppy drive have no bearig on Jaws.
3 If you buy a new MS Office it will be a 2003, Jaws 4.5 won't go with
this.

I'd suggest that you have a look on www.freedomscientific.com for more
information but that is a general clue to what's going on, but I've missed
out quite a few things in the process.

Hi list members
At present I have Jaws 4.5 and Windows XP home. I am considering purchasing
Jaws 6.1 which will cost me about £200 without an SMA. I would like to know
what are the benefits of taking this step? Have many new features and
improvements been added to this latest version?
Many thanks
Bob Gould
