Hi Dorothy and all,

OK, here is my attempt to explain several concepts in a non-technical
manner.

As you are probably aware, computers operate by running lots of pieces of
software, all of which try to work harmoniously together. This sometimes
happens but occasionally doesn't.

Suppose we have three people ... Alf, Bill and Charlie.

Alf and Bill have phones but Charlie doesn't.

Alf wants to give a message to Charlie who is with Bill.

Alf rings Bill and asks him to give Charlie the message.

Yes, I know Bill could pass Charlie the phone but that would spoil my
analogy.

Alf gives the first part of the message to Bill who repeats it to Charlie
and so on.

Bill is the buffer between Alf and Charlie.

Data is often held in a buffer to be used when necessary or passed on when
suitable.

If Alf were to speak continually, Bill wouldn't have the time to pass on
each piece of information to Charlie so he gives the message in smaller
chunks. This is my analogy for the necessity of buffering. Only a finite
amount of space can be allocated for a buffer in the computer and if the
data too be place there is too large it has to be passed a chunk at a time.

Now, let us suppose that Bill doesn't hear very well.

He misunderstands some of what Alf says and passes on the wrong message.

DCM drivers sit in between other drivers and should, in a perfect world,
interrogate the data which passes through without changing anything for the
driver which is next in the chain. Unfortunately, this is not always the
case and things can inadvertently be corrupted. Despite rumours to the
contrary, programmers are only human and are prone to the very occasional
mistake.

If Bill passes on the wrong information Charlie will misunderstand too.

If a DCM driver, like Bill, gets it wrong the rest of the chain is thrown
out also including the software which has to work on the end result. This
might be the appearance of the image on the screen or the voice of your
screen reader etc.

In another way, Bill is an interceptor of the message and the quality of the
message depends on how well Bill receives and conveys the message to
Charlie.

Apologies for this rambling piece but it is the only way I can think of to
explain these things without suggesting a degree course in computer science
followed by a few years of work in this specialised field .

In the end, I think that it is probably best to imagine the contribution of
DCM drivers etc. as a black box which can or should do it's job without us
having to worry about it.

Regards and apologies again,

Phil Medway

Tiddy thank you however as I was having a few problems with the new
voices a technician actually for my Ocr said check your resolutions and
sent in those he knew were right.
I also asked Chris Mullins who had a look at his settings and they were
identical to those.

I cannot find the small tape I have recorded that setting on it is
something like 1274 x 780 and 32bt.

So in setting and display I put it in and that is when the Driver
problem appeared before that I did not know I had a Driver Problem, so the
screen does a reload or in old terms it blue screens. I fear the
worst that the operating system has had it but as some of the 3 year on
site warranty was left I called in Viglen engineer. He runs something
called Diags and said Computer is fine problem is software . However I
persuade him to o put in right resolutions he has to dismantle Lunar to
do this., before I signed his work sheet I asked him what he had written ,
he had written Problem was Lunar software and that the noise in the Tower
I also complained about was "within reasonable level " after that I
did try to get the right Driver and created that File with run dialogue
Msinfo 32 and it gathered up all about my computer . As mentioned after
that It was all abit of a nightmare a friend with no sight at all spent
1.5 hours having one Driver after another thrown at him. Eventually
Lunar support cleared off and only being talked through system Restore got
sound back. sorry about this Saga , in a way if I had not had problems
controlling Daniel in my OCR who would not stop reading and No key
stroke would halt him well no doubt the resolution of Jfw would not have
ever been mentioned. Add to that emails about Buffers not
emptying. or filling.

I do know I rather like that system restore I
Dorothy there must be a moral in this !

Ps if someone wants to explain about interceptors and Dcm and buffers
please do so.
