Nigel,

Is all your current thinking about Jaws being fed back to FS somehow, or is it just for you?

Tink.

Flore,
Sorry I've just had a better idea.
What if we get rid of the shift keys and pressing home and end while in say all mode will move to the appropriate position and keep reading. But if you press them twice in quick succession then they move to the appropriate position and stop reading.

What do you think,
Thanks,
Nigel

I think there may be some confusion which is probably my fault.

What I meant is when in say all mode pressing the up arrow key will move to the line above and keep reading. Pressing the down arrow key will move to the next line and keep reading. You are able to read line by line when doing this but Jaws just continues to talk. If you wanted the speech to stop you could either press the stop speech key and jaws would stop speaking with the cursor at the beginning of the word you stopped on and this word would be announced to the user. Or if the Home key is pressed focus will move to the beginning of the current line and speech would stop.

How does this sounds?

Thanks,
Nigel

As I said, the home key is used to get to the beginning of the current
line in Windows, so perhaps it, rather than the Up Arrow, might be used.
I'd still want to be able to read line by line while in SayAll. We're
no longer designing a JAWS from scratch; so that at any one time there
are many, many more active users of the program than learning users of
it. There must have been a reason why FS chose the shift key; perhaps
it is more 'sticky' and/or flexible. Some key assignments are, however,
possible to change. (Keyboard manager, etc.)

I tested Jaws when reading a line and when you stop speech and focus returns to the beginning of the line. I am proposing that you should stop at the begining of the word you stopped on and this word should be read out to the user to confirm the cursor location.

I think it makes more sense to use the up and down arrow keys rather
than
shift when in say all mode as this simplifies the number of keys used.
If
you want to read by line you will still be able to but not while in say
all
mode.

Nigel

This functionality is present: but with the right-shift key for going
down a line and reading on, during SayAll; and left-shift for reading
from the beginning of current line and onwards, during SayAll. The
Up-arrow key is for moving *up* a line, not for moving to the
beginning
of current line (for which the home key is the standard). I believe
that one should, always, have the option of reading text one line at a
time if one chooses.

I would like to suggest that for this screen reader that when you are
in
reed all mode pressing the down arrow key will move to the next line
down
and keep reading.

Pressing the up arrow key will move to the beginning of the current
line
and
keep reading. If the up arrow is pressed when already at the
beginning
of a
line, IE if the up arrow key is pressed twice in quick succession.
Then
the
line above will be read and the screen reader will keep reading.

If the user wishes to stop at any point he will press the stop speech
key
and the focus will reside at the beginning of the word he stopped on.
To
confirm this to the user this word will be read out.

What do you think?
Thanks,
Nigel
