Very well put Tris,

I was just about to answer this post but couldn't have put it as succinctly as you have.

Dear Alex et al

Before giving solution, explaining the cause may be of some help here.

Within HTML pages or in emails (those displayed by applications that
understand HTML)which themselves there are language tags which tell your
browser or email program which language the document has been authored in.
Similarly in Microsoft Word it is also possible to bury tags in to specify
much the same thing, in MS Word it is also used as a way of marking the
document for later proofreading using spell checkers, you
need to have the right one per language used and use it only where required.

Jaws uses these same kinds of tags to determine which of the supported
languages Jaws uses to speak. It so happens in computers that there are a
number of English codes including US English and UK English, when Jaws picks
these up it will switch to the apropriate one.

Plain text message you get should have no language code and therefore Jaws
should not switch from your default. However HTML messages are quite
another thing and may have language tags buried within them, therefore Jaws
may switch.

In order to stop Jaws from switching you need to do the following, this will
stop Jaws ever switching language, but if you are resolutely monoglot then
this shouldn't bother you:
1 With Jaws running press insert+F2, and choose "configuration manager"
2 In configuration manager press alt+S to open "set options" menu.
3 Arrow down to "HTML options" and press enter.
4 Press tab until you reach "detect language" checkbox and press spacebar
to uncheck it.
5 Now tab to "OK" button and use spacebar to activate it.
6 Press alt+F4 to leave configuration manager but press letter Y to save
"yes" to save the changes.
7 Restart the PC and then you should find Jaws should no longer switch
accent or for that matter language.

Hi all,

Most of the time when I open a message in OE6 JFW 5.10 reads it to me in
British English which is what I have set it to do, but every so often It
seems to want to switch to American English.

I wondered if any of you could suggest any cause for this oddity and any
solutions to stop it occurring again.

Thank you in advance.
Alexander Shannon
