Just a quick message to thank all those who responded to my question
(below). For reference the cause of the problem was down to the video card
(Nvidea) which is not compatible with JAWS.

was wondering whether any of you had experienced a similar problem to the one inflicting a friend of mine.
The problem is that when he is compiling an email in Outlook Express using
JAWS 5.0 he is unable to read back all of the contents. Sometime it will
read the top line and sometimes after moving onto a word it will repeat the
first letter in that word over and over again. But most of the email is not
read back at all.
Any thoughts on this would be much appreciated
