Stand-by uses the computers battery to trickle a small current to the memory in 
your computer so it can retain information, so when you power up again, you'll 
be where you left off.  Hibernate writes information about the current 
situation  before it powers off and when you power up again, it uses the 
hibernate file to put you back where you were.  Both do the same job but 
stand-by will eventually drain your battery.
