One snag with JAWS is that it is so highly customisable and you can
install third party scripts, if those play with the default set in any
way this can play havoc with an upgrade install. This is not the whole
story by any means but it is certainly part of it. The best advice I
could give here is that if the update mechanism does not work properly
then download the full build and install over the top which will get
JAWS upgraded but you will still need to clear out the user folder and
reinstall the third party scripts if they mess with the default set.

I am not sure about the Windows Live Mail software, I will have to try
it out. I know some people have used Thunderbird with JAWS to a degree
of success. Are you running the VISTA theme or have you shifted things
into its classic mode Graham?

Regards.

Hi Vanja.
firstly I had similar problems to you with the installation but doing a
repair of jaws did the trick though I had to tell it to remove all user
settings for this to work. this happened on 2 PCs one runnigng vista
with very few scripts installed other than those that come with JAWS and
the other an XP machine with a few changes and skype scripts installed.

While of course I understand there are always problems with complex
pieces of software it's a poor job when something as basic as the update
process appears to be broken for most users. Has anyone managed to
successfuly install the update using the check for updates feature?
Maybe I have just been unlucky and not come across anyone who has got
this to work so far.

I would like to think that windows live messenger would work better but
I am also concerned about the level of support for windows live mail.
you can't find out whether or not messages are read or unread or whether
they have attachments. I thought that in Vista Windows Live mail was
meant to be preferred to Windows Mail that originally came with Vista.
I can't believe that support for such core features has been neglected
by freedom scientific or is there something obvious I am missing here.

Cheers

Graham

Subject: [jaws-uk] First impressions of jaws update.

Hi,

Mostly jaws 10 update that was released today appears to be working fine
and there are no major problems with it. There was a few difficulties
with installation and there are a few things that I'm not so happy
about. Firstly during the installation of the update I kept getting
error message telling me that the update couldn't be installed and that
the installation will close. There was no reason given. I did jaws
repair, but that didn't solve the problem. So in stead I downloaded id
the full version from the website and that worked and I finally managed
to update jaws 10.

There are two annoyances. The first one and not so important one, is
that after installing the update all my dictionary settings were gone.
Not quite sure why it happened. But more annoying thing is concerning
windows live messenger. Yes, the "what's new" material correctly says
that we can now read message history, but it doesn't tell us that
unfortunately jaws still doesn't read incoming messages automatically. I
am quite disappointed about this, as someone who uses windows live
messenger a lot. Also it is quite annoying that when going through the
contact list jaws reads out email address of each contact. I'd prefer to
use "say line" command if I need to find out what someone's email
address is.

I would say that I hope that this will be resolved soon, but as we just
had an update, I can't see FS releasing another update any time soon.
