Thanks for that George...

I probably wouldn't have installed it anyway but glad for the notice.

Natwest's worst idea since they introduced the card readers.

If you are a JAWS using Nat West Bank customer, please read on.

The following warning appeared on the BCAB list this morning, advising
JAWS users NOT to install their, "Rapport Financial security
software".

You have been warned.

George.

Subject: [bcab] Urgent Warning - do not install Rapport

Dear list,

This is a warning not to install the Rapport Financial security
software if
invited to by your bank. This morning I tried to access my internet
banking
site, Nat West in the UK. I was met with a window telling me that I
should
install the Rapport financial protection software to enhance security.
As
Nat West has reassured me in the past that they always check their web
pages
with Jaws I accepted the invitation to install. .

Basically the software then knocked out all IE browser capacity with
Jaws.
Jaws could only read the titles of web pages , could read no text from
the
actual pages and could not detect any links or form fields on pages.

Alarmed by this I rang up Nat West Technical Support. Basically we
spent
about half an hour deleting cookies, looking through add ones etc. to
no
affect. At the end the Support Team worker confessed that they had had
several other calls from visually impaired users complaining of this
problem
but could only offer to pass the concerns up the line.

I eventually investigated add remove programs on my own initiative and
discovered Rapport there. Amazingly any attempt to uninstall the
program is
responded to with an inaccessible interface which Jaws cannot cope
with. I
enlisted the help of my sighted wife and she told me that the
un-install
wizard includes a screen with a graphics capture in which a user needs
to
type in letters displayed on an image. This means that it is
impossible for
a screen reader user to un-install this software unless they have
sighted
help.

Once Rapport was removed Jaws was able to read web pages again.

I have complained to Nat West and have urged them to post a warning
for
screen reader users on their page. I have been reassured over the
phone that
I should be able to continue to use the bank online services and I
will not
be any more liable for not installing the software. However, as I am
required to check a box on the site that I have read the message about
downloading and installing Rapport I am not so confident about this
verbal
reassurance.

Anyway I thought I should post an urgent message to stop others
encountering
this problem who may not have sighted help.
