[jaws-uk] Defrag and disc clean up.

Hallo there. I hope this isn't the Gypsy's warning, but if you recall I
had a complete hardrive failure back in March. Yes that is how long ago it
was. Andrew Hodgeson said Defragg can be high risk if you stop it before it
ends. I do not think I did do that but the Defrag only took as long as a
Norton full system Scan, about 48 minutes. I am talking about my desktop.
at the moment I am using my Toshiba laptop. The Viglen desktop has arrived
back after Andrew has done a wonderful job on it. As some of you if you
followed or manage the tale of disaster that is 5 yes five Engineers
making a total cock-up of replace the Drive and doing a rebuild know It was
an ordeal I would not wish on anyone. The first three Engineers were from
the computer maker Viglen and it was under warranty. The first Engineer
changed the drive but could not register Jaws. We though the floppy disc
was perhaps the problem. The second Engineer fared no better. I had
complained the new Drive was far too noise. It being an IBM Hitachi, and one
removed a Western Digital. He could not register Jaws. Finally Tony Berry
RNIB helper took it and discovered the first Engineer has put on Windows XP
Professional. Now my computer has always been XP Home, hence Jaws would not
let anyone register it. meanwhile I have ordered and bought from TandT
Consultancy the latest Version of Jaws 7. That did not have a diskette.
However it would not register either. Tony said only Jaws is holding you up.
nothing else Lunar or Kurzweil will object but you will have to cough up
more for JAWS Professional. Thereafter a few further disasters take place
mainly around Interceptors and Drivers and Graphics. By now I am thinking to
myself, I will never ever do a Defrag again in case it was my fault. Of the
Engineers who came from Viglen 51 said Yes, it is high risk and he tried to
explain about Indexes. Andrew also tried to explain about indexes. So far as
I can understand and George if you are around pleas expand on this. Indexes
are like the shelves on a library shelf? If you work in a library, you
would return a returned library book to the place you took it from? However
if it is a Drive then you maybe putting back files.e. books for e.g in any
place you can find a space? So if all is flashing around the system at
high speed and if for example a file is damaged or corrupted could that be
distributed through the computer causing a failure. I think I only part
understand you see. If you see the date is June now not March, I have my
computer all beautifully set up by Andrew am dying to use it but need some
help getting it back on the desktop and all the wires in the right places.
a friend did try but we realise that as I have independent Video card he
plugged in not correctly. So that is the status quo. I am sorry to bore you
with that lot. However I think we all need to understand the risks. I
wouldn't want anyone of you to go through a three month nightmare. Now if
this Disc Clean up is safe I may try that. Dorothy
