George, I don't think that works. I have just tried it.
If you are sending a plain text message, then put "mailto:"; immediately in front of the address as in the following example: mailto:george@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
This should then make it into a link.
With HTML messages, this is not necessary.
