That latter option is interesting. It seems to provide a solution to those who might have hearing impairments of various degrees in addition to visual impairments. I joined Facebook when there was no captcha, but I'm pleasantly surprised at the audio and text options being present, as they don't necessarily have accessibility as a concern. Anyway, back on topic, some have suggested screen readers should implement ways around captcha, and I would strongly disagree--such things would be first of all a security risk, since it would be fairly easy for a hacker or someone with malicious intent to grab a screen reader's demonstration version and use it to do harm, and secondly, captcha isn't a simple thing--it's increasingly becoming quite complex. The reason for this is simply that captchas are being broken all the time. Specifically, since this is a JAWS list, imagine if JFW had such a feature! There would be so many lawsuits, and no doubt there would be international legal disputes of great magnitude!

I recently found a good idea on Facebook. I was asked to enter the usual details from a capture graphic but also offered the opportunity of either using an audio link or to varify my account by entering my mobile number and receiving a text to enter on the page. I chose the last option and have not been asked to enter a capture since.Audrey----- Original Message ----- From: "Tristram Llewellyn" <tristram.llewellyn@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx>To: <jaws-uk@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Monday, June 16, 2008 11:49 AM Subject: [jaws-uk] Re: Captcha killer"It seems to me that, while such sites as Captcha Killer and others are well-meaning, the general trend is that they (a) don't work, and (b) are usually suspect anyway. " Sites would certainly be aware of the security risk involved because as you correctly identify such technology not is not exclusively in the hands of well meaning good guy services. Many will have upgraded their systems, some of whichi must be quite poor if CAPTCHA killer can break them. Hopefully systems like Open ID will gain wider adoption and therefore allow visually impaired users to successfully sidestep the CAPTCHA problem whilst also gaining a verifiable identity on the web they can use with multiple sites. I don't know how many sites other people have to log into but mine must be in the many tens now and even remembering their respective logins is now very difficult. Regards. Heaven only knows what may be the actual intention of some of these "services"! This is why I choose not to use them in the first place, but it certainly doesn't surpsie me that it wouldn't work. If you read some of the comments on there, people are complaining that it doesn't work. To answer the click question, I was unable to do this until I useed Jaws 8, position the cursor on the immage and right click it, this will bring up the menu you want. Don't think it will help you though, smiles. Looks like we VIPs have a long struggle on our hands with this one. Guess some noisy lobbying would help. One question of anyone who has used captcha killer. The notes say to click on the image to create a picture file, but how do we do that when the image has no label? Does the click need to be accurately positioned? After posting the original question, I thought I had a brainwave, to print the page and run it through my OCR scanner, but I gather from what has been said that it would not work. Oh well.
