Tom,

I think we need an alternative to BT! Does anyone know what the "B" in BT
stands for? As it certainly doesn't stand for British any more.

Dave Ankers

Hi Dave,

Don't know about brick walls, but, got the great wall of china on Saturday.

However, an Indian guy was more helpful yesterday.

Pete gave me a useful link on Saturday and I also used this one.
speedtester.bt.com

I'm using Bt home hub and that manager also lets you run a speed test.

One more thing, Bt engineers are costing round £100 per hour so if anybody
knows alternatives please lets have some.

Tom

Pete,

You are correct it is typical and its not good enough! I currently use BT
complete broadband option 3, and its rubbish!
Very slow considering its upto 8 megabites, I thought to maximum number of
users was restricted to 50, considering the speed I think it is more likely 500!
When I have call the helpline, I get put through to an Indian call centre and
soon get fed up having to repeat myself, may as well talk to a brick wall.
They keep repeating the same info like damn robots. The BT helpdesk used to
have an easy to use connection and speed checker, cannot find those anymore
with the latest version.
BT uses Norton antivirus, well known for hogging the pc and so no good for JAWS
and Dragon users. I have been considering switching providers for some time
and have been looking at the deal from sky. It costs £15 minimum for the TV,
£5 for unlimited phone calls using your standard land line, unfortunately you
still need to pay BT £11 line rental, which means you will still loose
broadband connection in some areas when it rains, plus £5 to get upto 8
megabites. All together that equals what I pay BT just for broadband.
Does anyone here use ~Sky broadband? Please let me know if you have any
problems with it.
One other thing, I think sky's call centre is in Scotland, NOT INDIA!

Dave Ankers

Hi Tom,

This is typical I'm afraid, I wanted my line tested too so I used the online
chat help, I got a call centre in India, I could tell by the names they were
typing, but their written English is good so if you want BT support you could
try that route, you can access it from the desktop help, here's hoping you can
get your JFW to read it.

Regards,

Pete H.

Hi Pete,

Thanks.

Trying to get to the bottom of why I'm only getting 1.3 megs from BT total
broadband when says should be getting up to 8.

The link you gave me confirms figures.

I wondered if broadband help could help.

Phone line is okay, but, possibly there is a prob in extension socket. Spoke to
a guy at BT Broadband help desk, but, he was chinese and I'm Scottish and there
was interesting communication.

Kept telling him I was blind,iE couldn't see and he kept asking what colour the
box was and if I could see 2 screws...

Tom

Tom,

You can download Flash Player from www.adobe.com if you want it, but if all you
want to do is a speed test, you can go to one of many websites, here is the one
I use:
http://www.broadbandchoices.co.uk

Anyway let us know how you get on.

Regards,

Pete H.

Hi Pete,

Where do you get it from?

Also, seems when I start broadband help, I go through a kind of resetup process.

I just really want to run a speed check and diagnosis.

Yes, I downloaded it a couple of weeks ago, but you need Adobe Flash Player
enabled in order to use it, but it works pretty well with JFW 8.
