If you want books in general and don't mind them being rather old,
http://www.gutenberg.org
has thousands of publications which are out of copyright in the US.
Most of these are in plain text format and are available for download.
http://www.britishlibrary.org.uk
has a great many exhibits on their site for viewing and are in the process
of making the site more accessible.
If you want up-to-date books on specific subjects, you will find them by
searching the net but may have more success looking for books which you are
able to read online rather than to download.
