what operating system is she running? If she is using win xp, 2k, 2k3, or vista, she might want to try NVDA. Nvda is getting to where it can be used fulltime. there is an active user community out there. buying an old version of jaws - or widnow eyes for that matter - would leave her without support and at least with jaws that also would mean without replacement of lost authorization keys, whether the auth disks used prior to jaws 5.1/6.0 or the newer internet authorization scheme.

FS say that if you buy an earlier version from someone, then you need to pay

Hypothetically, the only way to do it would be to buy an earlier version and
not tell FS.

Subject: [jaws-uk] BUYING AN EARLIER VERSION

Friends

A friend of mine has a computer which is about three years old, and so far
she has been using Lookout as her screenreader. She is trying to save her
pennies to buy JAWS, but I am concerned that if she buys version 8 it will
not be compatible with her system and might cause her more problems. She is
not very technically minded, and finds getting to grips with computer
problems very annoying.

I am wondering whether it is possible to buy earlier versions of JAWS,
either from one of the UK dealers or second-hand from someone who has
upgraded to a higher version. If the latter, what does she need to do to
transfer ownership to herself? Knowing her system, I think version 6 would
be best.

Any help on this would be appreciated.

Wendy
