Going back to the original point, this issue with Access does affect
me and I find it ridiculous and pathetic that they don't plan to fix
it till release 13.  When is 13 due out anyway?  There will be new
problems by then with newer versions of Access presumably.  But in
fairness, no, I haven't tried an alternative for Access.  Perhaps I
should try NVDA or something else.
