Thanks for all replies.
I Tried updating a 7.5 and an 8 version. In the case of the 7.5 version it
removed the whole program first before installing the new. In version 8 it
gave a modify screen and had all the relevant boxes ticked for change. Both
went smoothly, and yes it updated the paid versions with no problem.

I don't generally cross post responses between lists but in this case it
might be apropriate. Here is my earlier response today on a similar
vein.
The basic AVG anti-virus 8.5 is free (no tech support, domestic user
model) as before. The Internet Security package however is not free.
You can get AVG Free 8.5 from this page by picking the first download
button after the table on this page.

Please find below your new Jaws Activation License Code. Please be sure
to copy all of it into your clipboard by highlighting it and pressing
control+C to copy to clipboard. Copy this into the "Activation License
Code" edit box under the "Code generated from FSActivate.com" option.
To install it:
1 With Jaws alredy running open the Jaws window with insert+J and
press
alt+h for help/
2 Arrow to "update authorisation" and then press enter.
3 Tab to "activate" button and press spacebar.
4 If prompted for an authorisation CD tab to the button "entern
authorisation information manually" button and press spacebar on it.
5 Use the arrow keys to select the option "Code generated from
FSActivate.com" and tab to the "next" button pressing spacebar to
activate it.
6 In the next dialogue paste in the activation License code shown
above into the relveant box and choose "next".
This should install the Jaws license.

free and he said he tried to get the free version of AVG8.5 but it kept
