Could it be somehow associated with that Firefox/ELFLoader problem - 
to quote Ian Hamilton "this was someone installing the ELFLoader into 
Predesk (in one of the !Boot directories in Choices or ROHook 
directories) in a directory called "release"
I removed this and my icons returned
