I can't explain why, though. Following various suggestions I made to John, removing a Creative sound card stopped the problem, but as it now errors (re missing Creative card) on booting, it is possible that booting is incomplete and something later in the boot sequence is the culprit. But I think probably the Creative card was the problem. John is now trying to remove the 'Creative' software to check. Anuone know off hand where it is installed normally?
