Overall, I think it would be useful if all future installers were able
to check for any unplugged modules and (unless there is some compelling
reason why this should not be done) automatically re-insert them before
installing the upgrade.
Taking variables out the equation is usually the best approach, so
perhaps this warrants a little thinking and application...
